If you’re commuting by bike through London, there’s nothing worse than mechanical failure, squeaky brakes, or a busted chain on your way to work. Regular servicing is your best defence, not only for safety and reliability, but also to avoid far costlier repairs later. At NipNip, we’ve designed tiered servicing packages (Bronze, Silver, Gold) to give every commuter, city rider, and electric-bike owner exactly what they need.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through what each service includes, help you pick the right one for your bike and riding habits, explain how routine servicing saves money, and show why NipNip is a solid choice for bicycle repairs and London bike servicing.
Why Regular Servicing Matters
Before diving into the tiers, it’s worth pausing to consider why servicing is so important:
- Safety first – Brakes, tyres, bolts, and cables gradually wear. A routine check can catch a loose bolt or worn pad before it becomes dangerous.
- Extend component life: Cleaning and lubrication reduce wear on chains, derailleurs, bearings, and other moving parts.
- Cost prevention: A small issue (e.g. bent wheel, sticky cables) that’s ignored can escalate into expensive repairs.
- Performance and peace of mind: A well-serviced bike shifts and rides smoothly, and you’ll ride with confidence rather than worry.
- Resale value: If you ever sell or upgrade, a good service history helps build trust with the next owner.
- Electric bikes need love too: E-bikes have extra components (motor, battery, electronics) that must be checked and cared for, so servicing is even more critical.
With that in mind, let’s go into what each service tier offers.
NipNip’s Bike Servicing Tiers – What’s Included?
At NipNip, we offer both workshop (hub) mobile, and collect services in London. The following breakdown reflects standard hub pricing and service scope (mobile/collection may incur additional fees).
Bronze Service – £40 (hub)
The Bronze Service is our baseline, designed for riders who want essential maintenance and safety checks to keep their bike functioning reliably.
Included tasks:
- Full safety check
- Frames and forks are wiped down and checked for alignment
- Wheels and tyres inspected for wear
- Chains checked and lubricated
- Gears and brakes adjusted
This is ideal for daily commuters, casual riders, or bikes that are already reasonably well-maintained. Think of it as the “tune-up” you do to prevent minor faults from becoming major issues.
Silver Service – £80 (hub)
Stepping up from the Bronze, the Silver Service includes everything from the Bronze, plus deeper cleaning and more detailed component checks.
- Drive train (chain, cassette, and chainset) cleaned, checked, and re-lubricated or replaced
- Wheels, hubs, and rims checked for damage and wear, cleaned
- Bearings checked for damage and wear, cleaned
- Headset checked for free movement and adjusted if necessary
- Brakes checked for effective operation and adjusted or replaced if necessary
This service is ideal for frequent riders, those who have ridden in wet or dirty conditions, or bikes that haven’t been serviced in a while.
Gold Service – £160 (hub)
Gold is NipNip’s flagship full-service – everything is taken apart, cleaned, inspected, reassembled, and fine-tuned. Ideal for high-mileage cycles or those preparing for long rides.
What you get on top of Silver & Bronze:
- Disassembly: wheels, hubs, bottom bracket, headset, drivetrain, all components
- Deep cleaning, inspection, re-greasing of hubs, bearings, bottom bracket, headset
- Threads cleaned and checked
- New cable sets (brakes & gears) fitted (parts not included)
- New bar tape fitted (parts not included)
- Comprehensive reassembly and adjustment
In short, every moving or wearing part is touched. This is the one to pick if you want to reset your bike to a near-new spec.
Which Tier Is Right for You?
If you’re unsure which NipNip service tier is best for you, it largely depends on how often you ride and the level of maintenance your bike needs.
The Bronze Service is perfect for everyday commuters who rely on their bike to get to work and want it to remain safe and dependable without spending too much. It includes all the essential checks and adjustments required to keep your bike running smoothly, making it ideal for riders who want peace of mind on their daily journeys.
The Silver Service is a great choice for those who ride more frequently, around three to five times a week, or often encounter wet, dirty, or rough conditions on London’s roads. This tier goes beyond the basics by including a deeper clean, detailed bearing checks, and precise cable adjustments. It helps maintain your bike’s performance and prevents wear caused by tougher riding conditions.
The Gold Service is designed for cyclists who have put in a lot of miles or whose bikes haven’t had a thorough service in a while. It’s a complete overhaul that involves stripping the bike down, cleaning every component, inspecting each part, and re-greasing before reassembly. The result is a bike that feels as close to new as possible, ensuring smooth performance and long-term reliability.
Also note that for mobile or collect services, the cost is a bit higher. For example, a hub Gold is £160, but mobile Gold is listed around £170, and collect Gold is £180.
If parts are needed (e.g., new cables, brake pads, chain, cassette), those are extra charges. However, we will always quote additional parts before proceeding.
Why Regular Servicing Saves Money
It’s tempting to skip regular maintenance, but the cost of neglecting your bike can grow quickly. A worn chain, for instance, can damage the cassette and chainrings, leading to expensive replacements. Stuck or misaligned wheels might cause bent rims or hub damage, while friction in bearings and cables wastes energy and accelerates wear on key components. Even minor, hidden issues can eventually develop into serious problems, such as frame or fork cracks. For electric bikes, the stakes are even higher; neglecting the motor or battery can result in costly component failures that are far more expensive to repair than a routine service.
By servicing your bike at the right intervals, Bronze once or twice a year, Silver annually, and Gold every few years or after heavy use, you can stay ahead of wear and avoid cascading mechanical failures. Many riders agree that regular maintenance is worth it. One cyclist, for example, noted that a £40 Bronze service was an excellent annual investment to keep their bike “in tune” and performing well after the wear and tear of winter commuting.
Tips to Get the Most from Your Service
- Book ahead in peak times (spring, autumn) to avoid delays
- Keep a service log to note when you last had Bronze/Silver/Gold
- Clean your bike occasionally (rinse off grit, dirt) to reduce wear
- Watch wear parts – know when your chain, cables, or pads look worn
- For e-bikes, tell the mechanic about any unusual behaviour (motor noise, battery, quirks)
- Ask questions! Our team at NipNip can explain what they’ve done and why
